Exchange 2007 SP1 – Remote Backups is Disabled

Exchange Server 2007 (RTM, Before SP1) is allowed to take Remote Streaming Backups so backup software can back up of Exchange server remotely, without running on the Exchange server itself. Microsoft says this configuration is less secure because of below two reasons

  1. Any of the backup operator can take backup of Exchange server.
  2. Backup flow to remote server is NOT encrypted and flowing in client accessible network.

In Exchange 2007 SP1, it is disabled by default because these two potential security threats and to make it more secure by default with compliance.

There is a way to enable it manually by changing registry key.

Path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\ MSExchangeIS\ParametersSystem

Name: Enable Remote Streaming Backup

Value: 0 = default behavior (remote backup disabled), 1 = remote backup enabled

After changing this registry key, you need to restart Microsoft Exchange Information Store services. Tags: ,
